Please take time out of your day to check on friends and family, especially the elderly during heat advisorys, warnings & alerts. – GenPhilly
The heat is being blamed for the death of a 92-year-old West Philadelphia woman.
A neighbor who went to check on the woman found her on a bed on the second floor of her home on Monday, said Jeff Moran, spokesman for the Medical Examiner’s Office.
The Medical Examiner ruled today that she was the fifth person to die from heat related causes in the city this year, Moran said.
No details about the woman besides her age and zip code – 19139 – are being released.
Moran said windows were open and a fan operating on the first floor of the woman’s house, but only one window was open about 4 inches on the second floor, where she was found.
Since heat rises, unventilated upper floors are a hazard particularly for the elderly when heat warnings are in effect, as was the case Monday as well as today.
