Happy Birthday GenPhilly Turns 2

Greetings Network Members and Supporters:

GenPhilly is turning two this month!  In February 2009, a handful of “young professionals” in the Aging Network got together to create GenPhilly.  Today, we have more than 180 members from diverse disciplines, such as urban planning, social work, philanthropy, community development, marketing, the arts, city government and more.

Through creative programming, we inspire and engage Philadelphians to connect with older adults in their professionals and personal lives.  Over the past two years, we’ve catalyzed new efforts in the city to support seniors and their pets, to connect senior centers to community gardens, to celebrate creativity and aging, to explore the images of woman and aging in the media, and much more.

These events, our listserv, and bi-monthly meetings are increasing the capacity of tomorrow’s leaders to understand the opportunities and challenges of an aging society.

Here are some of our accomplishments:

While much of the success of this network is due to the vision and commitment of members, Philadelphia Corporation for Aging (PCA), the Area Agency on Aging for Philadelphia, deserves strong recognition for its foresight in supporting the group and for devoting staff time to its development.  We would also like to thank the United Way and the Jewish Federation for offering space for our bi-monthly meetings.

We are very proud that our programming has catalyzed larger efforts by local organizations to make the city more “age-friendly”  and with your continued participation, we hope to further this trend in 2011.

Stay tuned for more information on  upcoming events including:

  • Career Boom: Job Security in an Aging America on April 13th at Temple University
  • The Vintage Dance Party in July

Please email kclark@pcaphl.org for more information or if you are an emerging leader, to join the network.

Sincerely,
The GenPhilly Leadership Committee
